Caring for an animal is not limited to diagnosis, internal medicine, or surgical procedures — as important as all of these may be. Modern veterinary medicine approaches each animal holistically, viewing it as a complex system of interconnected body systems that function in complete harmony.

For this reason, we place special emphasis on prevention: regular check-ups, preventive screenings, vaccinations, and educating pet owners. We believe that prevention is the most powerful tool for maintaining animal health and avoiding more serious problems in the future.

Our clinic has the experience and the resources to diagnose and treat conditions affecting various body systems, including dermatological, ophthalmological, reproductive, digestive, musculoskeletal, and more.

We are here to intervene promptly and help your four-legged friend return healthy and happy to their daily life.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have any questions? Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions about our services and the care of your animals.

Yes, dogs can have allergies, although they don’t always manifest similar symptoms of human allergies. There are three main types:

  • Food allergy
  • Flea allergy
  • Atopic dermatitis

In all three cases, the symptoms are often similar: the dog may experience intense itching, scratching specific areas, licking persistently, or biting itself. Food allergies may also come with gastrointestinal symptoms, such as vomiting and diarrhea.

Changes that owners may notice include:

  • Changes in the color or quality of the coat
  • Hair loss in specific areas
  • Appearance of skin lesions

If you notice anything unusual in your dog’s behavior or appearance, it’s important to visit the veterinarian to determine whether it’s an allergy and to identify the cause, so the appropriate treatment can be followed.

We often hear: “There are no ticks or fleas in winter” or “My dog lives only indoors.” However, in Greece, with its warm climate—and the climatic changes we are experiencing—external parasites are present almost all year round.

Some, like flea eggs, are extremely resilient. Most dogs, even if considered “indoor dogs,” go outside at least twice a day for walks, where they encounter parasites. Even if they don’t go out, they may have access to plants on a balcony, or parasites can be brought into the home on our shoes or clothing.

Additionally, mosquitoes and sandflies can easily enter the house and are dangerous carriers because:

  • Mosquitoes transmit heartworm (Dirofilaria)
  • Sandflies transmit leishmaniasis

For these reasons, consistent preventive treatment with antiparasitic products is essential year-round, regardless of your dog’s lifestyle.

Cats, as small felines, may sleep most of the day or sit in a corner lazily grooming themselves while you rush through daily tasks. However, they are naturally nocturnal hunters. In the wild, they hunt their prey at night, thanks to their excellent night vision.

So no, your cat isn’t being vengeful or trying to keep you awake. It’s simply following its instincts, chasing imaginary prey around your living room and keeping you up.

While their nature won’t change, you can adjust your environment to help:

  • Limit their access to the bedroom at night
  • Try to tire them out with play before bedtime
  • Ensure food and water are available

With a little understanding and some small adjustments, nighttime peace can be restored.

This behavior, known as coprophagia, is fairly common in dogs, especially puppies, and can have several causes:

  • Behavioral: boredom, anxiety, or trying to get your attention
  • Nutritional deficiencies: e.g., lack of certain vitamins
  • Medical causes: gastrointestinal issues or pancreatic insufficiency
  • Age-related: puppies that haven’t yet been fully trained may eat everything from socks and toys to feces, or imitate older animals in the household with the same habit; older dogs with dementia may also eat non-food items.

While it’s not rare, it is not normal behavior. If it happens regularly, it’s important to consult your veterinarian to rule out any medical causes and receive guidance on behavior modification.

The answer is: yes, but with caution! Many indoor and outdoor plants are toxic to dogs and cats, especially if ingested in large amounts. Some common toxic plants include:

  • Lily (especially dangerous for cats)
  • Dracaena
  • Zamia
  • Cyclamen
  • Monstera
  • Dieffenbachia
  • Aloe
  • Philodendron

Ingestion can cause anything from mild mouth irritation and gastrointestinal upset (vomiting, diarrhea) to severe toxicosis with neurological or respiratory symptoms.

For safety, choose non-toxic plants or keep toxic ones out of reach. If you notice your pet chewing on leaves or showing sudden symptoms such as vomiting, drooling, lethargy, or tremors, seek veterinary care immediately.

The frequency of check-ups depends on your dog’s age, breed, and overall health. However, there are some general recommendations for most pets:
  • Once a year for healthy adult dogs up to 7 years old: a clinical examination and basic blood tests are recommended.
  • Twice a year for senior dogs or giant breeds that are predisposed to multiple health issues.
  • More frequently if your dog has a chronic condition (e.g., diabetes, epilepsy, kidney disease), with blood tests possibly every 1–3 months depending on the condition.

Remember! Annual or semi-annual exams aren’t just to “see if they’re okay”—they help detect problems early, before symptoms appear. Many conditions in dogs are asymptomatic in the early stages.

Tip: Don’t wait for your dog to get sick to visit the vet. Prevention saves lives and can reduce long-term treatment costs.

Yes, dogs can develop a condition called Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS), which is similar to Alzheimer’s disease in humans and typically occurs in senior dogs. Signs include:
  • Confusion or disorientation (e.g., standing and staring at a wall)
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Changes in behavior or daily routines
  • Forgetting basic things, such as the location of food or the exit
  • Problems with defecation and urination
  • Aimless wandering
  • Unexplained vocalizations at inappropriate times

While there is no cure, special diets, supplements, and medications can slow the progression and improve your dog’s quality of life.

We’ve all fallen for that “look”—a mix of sadness and sweetness that melts even the strongest of us. But the answer is NO, for three main reasons:
  1. Obesity – This affects both joints and cardiovascular health and increases the risk of diabetes.
  2. Toxic foods – Some human foods are harmful to dogs, including chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes and raisins, certain nuts (especially macadamias), alcohol, coffee and tea, yeast dough, and sweets containing xylitol.
  3. Picky eating habits – If given tasty human food, dogs may refuse their regular balanced dry food.

Additionally, fatty foods, spicy seasonings, and fried foods can cause gastrointestinal upset or even pancreatitis.

Your dog needs a balanced diet specifically designed for their species. If you want to offer “human” foods, consult your veterinarian about which foods and in what amounts are safe.
